Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Welcome to the 37th Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference (NEBEC) held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY. RPI is home to one of the first biomedical engineering departments in the country and hosting NEBC, in midst of our historic buildings and ongoing bio -renaissance at Rensselaer, is an opportune moment for us. We are particularly excited to have one of our graduates from our first class of biomedical engineering students (Class of 1970) featured as a speaker, Dr. Paul Cordo. The key locations for the conference will be the newly constructed Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS) and the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC).

We have arranged an attractive program designed to foster networking, generate ideas, and further scholarship. Our session tracks are concentrated in the following areas: biomaterials, biomechanics, biological engineering, design, modeling and imaging/instrumentation, and regenerative medicine and stem cells. Having a dedicated biological engineering track is a new element this year, intended to incorporate chemical engineering as an interdisciplinary aspect of bioengineering.

This year we are excited to introduce several new aspects to the conference. There are events planned especially for students on Friday, April 1st. We will have a job fair with representatives from quality employers in the field of bioengineering and biotechnology. A senior design competition will provide an opportunity for undergraduates to present their senior design projects in a professional setting and be judged by industry representatives. We will have an Executives Forum with several CEO panelists from biotechnology companies.

We have also embedded social events into the program. There will be ice skating on Friday evening at the Houston Field House, home of the RPI Engineers. Go Engineers! On Saturday evening, we will be showing "Molecules to the Max" (an animated production of the Molecularium® Project at Rensselaer) where NEBEC participants will be able to "catch a ride to nanoSpace with Oxy and her crew to boldly go where only atoms have gone before"!

On behalf of our dedicated organization committee, I would also like to thank our financial sponsors, students and faculty members of Rensselaer for their help in putting together this exciting event.

Sincerely,

Deepak Vashishth, Ph.D.
